Our Santa Ynez Valley Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from our own estate vineyard in Los Olivos as well as a number of other carefully farmed vineyards within the Los Olivos area of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA. The 2013 Harvest marks the 37th consecutive vintage for this remarkable value, and this bottle is the result of our extensive experience in growing and vinifying this varietal. 

Rich and brimming with a tropical exuberance, the aromatic profile leads with a nose of lychee nut, honeydew melon, and wet stone, while flavors of orange zest, white nectarine, and guava round out the deliciously ripe palate. Pair with a chunk of Humboldt Fog blue cheese, or a Caesar salad with homemade croutons, Pecorino Romano, and fresh cracked black pepper. Enjoy!

Harvest Dates: August 22nd-September 27th, 2013   

Chemistry of grapes: Average Brix: 23.6 degrees; Average pH: 3.23

Winemaking: The grapes were harvested by hand, with the goal of picking at several sugar/acid and ripeness levels to provide a full range of blending parameters, resulting in a balanced and harmonious dry white wine with a complex aromatic and flavor profile. Every lot of grapes was 100% destemmed and crushed, then gently pressed with fractional separation, racked into stainless steel tanks, and inoculated with a range of yeast selections, with a preference for VL3. Fermentation carried out at moderate temperature range ( 55 to 65 degrees Farenheit ).  Approximately five percent of this wine was fermented and aged in neutral French oak barrels for additional richness and complexity, and then blended with a small percentage of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Semillon prior to bottling.

A much drier than normal year ( 5.9 inches versus 17.0 ) coupled with a warm August brought on an early start to Harvest 2013, with our first estate Sauvignon Blanc grapes coming in on August 22nd.  Our ripest estate lots were harvested with unusually low pHs relative to sugar levels ( 3.20 pH/ 25.5 degrees Brix ), allowing us a broad palette of flavors and ripeness levels with which to put together our reserve bottlings of Sauvignon Blanc.  Harvest continued throughout September without any significant heat spikes, and the other vineyards from the Los Olivos area were picked mostly in the 21.5 to 24.5 degrees Brix range. The overall high quality of Los Olivos region Sauvignon Blanc fruit led to numerous vineyard designated bottlings, including Mesa Verde, Tierra Alta, Buttonwood, and La Presa.
